The 4 CEP and 4 BEP main line units were constructed at Eastleigh Works
between 1956 and 1963 mainly for use on the Southern Region's South
Eastern division. The body styling was virtually B.R. Mk1 design mounted
on frames from Ashford, Kent. All units were fitted with Electro Pneumatic
brakes and gangwayed throughout. |
| 4 CEP |
111 four car units were built comprising of two Driving Motor coaches
(DMBSO), one at each end of the unit. These coaches were each fitted
with two English Electric 250hp traction motors, also fitted was a
Motor Generator to supply power to lighting, heating and other control
equipment. Accommodation on these coaches include a Guards compartment
and Brake Van, 1 four bay open saloon and 1 three bay open saloon for
56 second class passengers (8 seats per bay). The other coaches in each
unit built were one Trailer Composite (TCK), accommodating 4 first
class compartments each seating 6 passengers, 3 second class
compartments each seating 8 passengers and two toilets (one at each
end), all accessed by a side corridor running the full length of the
coach. The other coach being a Trailer Second (TSK), accommodating 8
second class compartments each seating 8 passengers, all accessed by a

22 four car Buffet units were built to run with the 4 CEP units. They
were identical in every way except there was no Trailer Second (TSK)
coach. In its place was a Trailer Restaurant Buffet (TRB),
accommodating 21 unclassified chairs with tables, a buffet for
passengers buying food and drinks and a kitchen area for staff. A

| ALLOCATIONS |
The prototype units 7101-7104 (4 CEP) and 7001 & 7002 (4 BEP) were
allocated to Brighton depot for use on the Southern Region's Central
Division and throughout the years these units rarely strayed from the
division. The initial production units 7105-7110 (4 CEP) were allocated to Ramsgate depot for use on the Southern Region's South Eastern Division but after a short while these units were reallocated to Brighton depot for use on the Southern Region's Central Division. The main production Phase 1 units 7111-7153 (4 CEP) and 7003 & 7012 (4 BEP) were allocated to Ramsgate depot for use on the Southern Region's South Eastern Division. Throughout the years these units rarely strayed from the division although some of the 4 BEP units were reallocated to Brighton depot for use on the Southern Region's Central Division. The main production Phase 2 units 7154-7202 (4 CEP) and 7013 & 7022 (4 BEP) were allocated to Ramsgate depot for use on the Southern Region's South Eastern Division. Throughout the years these units pretty much stayed true to the division. Supplimentary units 7203 & 7204 (4 CEP) were allocated to Ramsgate depot for use on the Southern Region's South Eastern Division. Supplimentary units 7205-7211 (4 CEP) when built were intended to be used on the Southern Region's South Western Division but were all eventually allocated to Ramsgate depot for use on the Southern Region's South Eastern Division. |
